Kanye West takes the cover the December/January 2011 issue of Complex magazine. The publication also spoke with the contributors for Yeezy’s album focusing on their roles in their Project: Runaway feature. Below is an excerpt from Pete Rock:

“I know one of Kanye’s bodyguards, and he told me that Kanye was looking for me. I just grabbed this bag of discs—these discs hold at least 50 beats apiece—and went to Hawaii. [Laughs.] That was my first time ever going to Hawaii, so I was blown back by the weather and the beach. It’s a beautiful environment to make music in. I immediately said to myself, ‘This is why he’s here!’ No one bothers you and you’re free as a bird; an important part of being creative is being able to be free in a good environment where you can make music and there’s no interruptions or disturbance or anything. When I got there, Kanye was in the chair in the studio getting his hair cut. He played the ‘Power’ song from before he even put the lyrics on it and he was spittin’ the lyrics to me. I’m real critical of emcees, but when I hear Kanye spit, it opens me up like a flower, man. I used to hear him spit my name in his own records before he even got with me, and I used to say to myself, ‘Damn, he says my name in more than two or three records! Maybe he’s trying to let me know he wants to work with me.’ The studio kind of reminded me of back in the days when I used to work on three or four projects at once, doing it all in the studio. That’s what he was doing—running back and forth from room to room to room to room. He had Kid Cudi upstairs, he was working on his album downstairs, then doing a mix on another record, and it straight reminded me of what I used to do back in the ’90s. He played ‘Runaway’—and as soon as I heard the drums come in, I just started laughing. He used my drums from Mecca and the Soul Brother! I used these drums in an interlude before this record called ‘The Basement,’ and those drums come on before the song. I never heard anybody make a song the way he made it out of those drums. I thought that was genius.”

After the jump are a few pictures by Nabil Elderkin that were captured in Hawaii, while the LP was in its formulative stage. Full gallery here.

Coast to Coast Ballers & Star Walls Club Member Kanye West Claims He Helps Taylor Swift to Be More Popular

While he feels bad for interrupting Taylor’s speech at 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, the ‘Heartless’ rapper says, ‘I feel like when Taylor was getting all those magazine covers, she was all good then.’

Kanye West has claimed his treatment of Taylor Swift made her more famous. While the controversial rapper admitted his behavior, when he stormed on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards during Taylor’s Best Female Video acceptance speech and ranted that Beyonce Knowles should have won, was unacceptable, he claimed it helped make the country singer even more popular.

“I feel like when Taylor was getting all those magazine covers, she was all good then,” he said. “I feel completely empathetic and sympathize with that moment of her feeling bad, that spawned her to have one million magazine covers and be the most popular artist in the world, but in that moment of her feeling bad, I do feel bad about being the cause of that.”

Although the “Runaway” hitmaker apologized to the 20-year-old songstress, he claimed interruptions at awards shows happen all the time. Speaking on U.S. radio show “Mojo in the Morning”, he said, “When I talked to Taylor I asked her, ‘What do you feel?’ … and I said we know I was rude, I’m sorry, I cut you off. Awards shows play music…they cut people off all the time.’ ”

The 33-year-old star, who took an extended break from music after the incident, revealed he now hopes to move on. He explained, “Personally, I’m better than I’ve ever been. I’m patching up my public image and where I am as an artist and where people perceive me.”

Welcome Home Weezy [Lil Wayne Officially Released From Prison after serving 8 Months]

MTV reports:

NEW YORK — Lil Wayne was released from the Rikers Island prison facility after serving eight months of a year-long sentence for attempted gun possession. Though a guard told MTV News early Thursday morning that he had to wait another day due to “miscalculated” time, at 8:35 a.m. a spokesperson at Rikers confirmed that Wayne had been discharged.

In March, Lil Wayne turned himself in to New York authorities after he struck a plea deal in his case stemming from a 2007 gun arrest near the Beacon Theatre in Manhattan.

The rapper and his entourage were leaving his first headline performance in the Big Apple when police pulled over his tour bus. The New York Police Department alleged that the odor of marijuana was coming from the vehicle and later searched the bus. Authorities discovered drugs and a gun, registered in Wayne’s manager’s name, near the rapper.

In New York, gun laws prohibit people without proper registration from being within operating capacity of a firearm. As a result, the rapper was charged with gun possession and eventually pleaded guilty to attempted gun possession.

Young Money President Mack Maine stopped by the MTV News offices Wednesday and revealed that Weezy would celebrate his homecoming with a party Sunday at a Miami strip club. According to Maine, Wayne’s musical family plans to “just treat him like a king, like the royalty that he is and make him feel like we really missed him and welcome him back to the family, basically.” The party follows Drake’s Light Dreams and Nightmares Tour stop Saturday in Las Vegas, a show at which both Maine and Drizzy have hinted Wayne may make a surprise appearance.

“I would just advise you to book a ticket out there. If you can get tickets to that show on the 6th, I would strongly advise it,” Drake told MTV News about the possibility of reuniting with his mentor onstage.
